Sydney Harbour Bridge, Milsons Point, Thursday 14.05 June 30th 2005 .

Sydney has had showery weather over the last few days and now heavy rain has begun to fall. But the much needed rain brings its own problems. Localised flooding in the city, road accidents and in the north of New South Wales, flood waters are expected to rise above 10m tonight in the city of Lismore and could flow over a levee protecting the central business district. About 3000 people are being evacuated.

The fine needles of a Casuarina tree hold tiny water droplets after a morning rain shower. This tree, also known as She Oak, is a native Australian species and is characterised by fine textured evergreen foliage that is often mistaken for a pine tree.

Ewenton House, Ewenton Park, Balmain, Friday 14.45 June 24th 2005.

Ewenton Park overlooks Jubilee Bay/Camerons Cove and contains one of Balmain's grand waterfront houses, Ewenton. Built in 1854 as a single story dwelling it was extended bewteen 1862 and 1873. It was purchased in 1911 by Henry Brisbane Swan, a timber merchant and local wharf owner. After his death it fell into disrepair but has now been meticulously restored. The garden you see in the foreground is part of the public park.

Inside the twin office blocks in Darling Park (seen in yesterday's photo) there is walkway that leads to a beautiful garden where office workers can relax and enjoy a break. This stairway leads to that area. It almost seems the people are ascending to a higher plane.

Cockle Bay Wharf, Darling Harbour, Wednesday 11.05 June 22nd 2005.

Cockle Bay Wharf, on Darling Harbour, was Sydney's first purpose built dining and entertainment precinct. It was completed in the late 1990's. This view towards the city takes in the towering office blocks of Darling Park. The weather was bright and sunny, but rather cold. It really feels as though winter has finally arrived.

Sydney Harbour Bridge Tuesday 16.50 June 21st 2005.

Today is the shortest day of the year. The winter solstice marks the point when the southern hemisphere is tilted furthest away from the sun. Once, the cold months were relied upon to bring much needed rain, but this year they have largely failed to do that. Meanwhile, the northern hemisphere will enjoy its longest day. We have to wait until December 21st to get ours.

Railway Sq Bus Interchange, George St., Monday 11.10 June 20th 2005.

The new $12 million Railway Square bus station has been universally acclaimed by architects and politicians, who probably don't use it, and widely condemned by the people who do. Complaints range from inadequate protection from sun, wind or rain, confusing signage, insufficient seating, inferior surface-water drainage, no toilets, to no information at the information kiosk.

The North Shore suburb of Chatswood has developed over the last decade into one of Sydney's leading business and retail centres. The 1960's Church of Our Lady of Dolours with it's tall bell tower is dwarfed by the many new high rise buildings that now dominate the Chatswood skyline.

Centrepoint Tower, Sydney, Sunday 13.35 June 12th 2005.

Centrepoint Tower is Australia's tallest building (305 metres) and was at one stage the tallest in the southern hemisphere. It dominates the city skyline. As I take all photos on this site in landscape format I thought how best to photograph this building that cries out for a vertical treatment. I settled on this odd angle to show as much of the shaft as possible. If you look carefully you will see the tiny form of three riggers working on the support cables. Yesterday was completely overcast and today there is not a cloud in the sky.

Taronga Zoo, Mosman, Saturday 12.30 June 11th 2005

I haven't been to the zoo in years so I decided to pay a visit today. It was somewhat disappointing. There are renovations in progress which have resulted in the closure of a number of exhibits and the animals in general seemed rather sleepy. Still the views across the harbour are great. You can just make out the Opera House and bridge in the background of this shot. Also it rained today (only for an hour) for the first time in a month.

McElhorne Reserve, Elizabeth Bay, Thursday 11.50 June 9th 2005

Hidden away down some narrow sidestreets is this beautiful little park. It's not even visible from the road, you have to climb up steps on an embankment to find it. It is in fact the front garden of historic Elizabeth Bay House I had problems resizing this for some unkown reason, that's why it doesn't look too sharp.

Darling St. Wharf, Balmain, Tuesday 12.40 June 7th 2005

At the end of Darling Street far from the bustle of Balmain there is a small park and ferry stop that offers a terrific view of the Harbour Bridge. The woman on the far right is using an umbrella to protect herself from the sun. This is the middle of winter, though you wouldn't know it from the weather we have been having. Warm sunny days, cool nights and no real rain now for ages. It seems the drought we are suffering from will only get worse.

Walking along King Street in Newtown you just never know what is going to happen. It's one of my favourite streets to amble down with its eclectic mix of restaurants, ethnic shops, secondhand goods shops and of course the odd fetish wear emporium. This one is having a moving sale and offering 50% off its wares. Has the window mannequin already been slashed by 50%?

Luna Park, Milsons Point, Sunday 19.35 June 5th 2005

Looking across the harbour from Circular Quay the lights of decades old Luna Park, the city's amusement park, light up the North Shore. Nearby residents of relatively new multi million dollar apartments are actively trying to have the park shut down due to the noise they have to "endure". Pity they didn't think about that before they bought the apartments.

Anzac Bridge, Rozelle, Friday 12.20 June 3rd 2005

Directly underneath the Anzac bridge were two guys practising jumps on their skateboards. (I'm sure there is some cool technical term for these jumps, but I forgot to ask) They let me take some photos, but I had no flash, it was very dull in there and difficult to get a properly exposed shot. After a lot of work in Photoshop this is the best I could manage.

Campbell Parade, North Bondi, Thusday 17.10 June 2nd 2005

Late in the afternoon the sky over Bondi had a fabulous orange colour. The building on the left is a famous landmark in the area. It's the home of the Bondi Surf Life Saving Club. It's members are the lifeguards that patrol one of Sydney's most dangerous and famous beaches. Strong rip currents frequently sweep swimmers (mostly tourists) out to sea. Despite many signs warning of the danger, people still swim outside the safety flags.
