Colgate Palmolive Building, East Balmain, Tuesday September 13th 2005.
Colgate-Palmolive began soap production in working-class East Balmain in 1923. The company employed 144 workers by 1925, most of whom were born and bred in Balmain.
They walked to work or caught the train down to 'Colgate Avenue', as it was renamed. Many people started working 'down the olive' at 15 years of age, eventually met their spouse there and stayed until they retired. Colgate-Palmolive was ingrained in Australian culture, with its soaps, toothpaste, shaving cream and brilliantine found in every household.
Closure of the plant began in 1993 after 70 years of operation. The site was redeveloped and opened as residential apartments.
