This Brushtail Possum is the tamest possum I have ever encountered. It came right up to the deck and sat on the handrail while we offered pieces of dried apricot. It didn't mind the flash from the camera and even posed for a series of shots!

St. Andrews Cross Spider.

Working on its web, this spider is named for the way it sits in the middle of the web forming a cross. It is harmless to humans and considered beneficial as its large web is a great mosquito catcher. It is however easy to walk into one of these webs as they are hard to spot and can cover a very large area. These spiders are a common inhabitant of most gardens throughout Australia.

Cicada Shell.

A fully-winged adult cicada has emerged leaving its old empty skin or exoskeleton behind. Found on trees and under leaves these are popular with kids who pick them up and stick them onto their clothes (the shells have sharp legs which pin onto almost anything) and run around claiming to be eaten alive by insects. Great fun!

Locally known as "The Toaster" this highly controversial development of luxury apartments, up-market cafes, restaurants & shops stretches most of the way along the eastern side of Circular Quay to the forefront of the Opera House. It has been described by the art critic and historian Robert Hughes as "that dull brash, intrusive apartment block which now obscures the Opera House from three directions"
