Snails Bay, Wednesday November 29th 2006.

After a roasting hot day yesterday where the temperature hit 38c (102F) it's back to cool cloudy conditions. This month has had the most variable weather for a November that I can remember.

Sydney University, Camperdown, Saturday November 25th 2006.

The Main Quadrangle of Sydney's oldest university. As part of some forward educational planning for my teenage children I am taking them on tours of the various universities around Sydney. My daughter (13) loved this one, comparing it to the school in Harry Potter, while my son (15) thought it too old and stuffy.

The HQ of the New South Wales Police Marine Area Command, who are better known as 'Water Rats' due to a popular TV drama series from the late 1990's. Water Police were the first civilian form of policing established in NSW. In 1789, one year after the colony was founded, Governor Phillip created a 'Row Boat Guard' to patrol Sydney Cove for smugglers and convicts attempting to pass letters to ships anchored in the harbour.

Sydney Harbour Bridge, Wednesday November 22nd 2006.

A smoke haze hangs over the city from a large bush fire burning in the Blue Mountains to Sydney's west. The fire has been burning for almost two weeks and shows no sign of being contained. With the temperature hitting 38C (102F) today and strong winds blowing it's a tough job for the firefighters.

National Maritime Museum, Darling Harbour, Tuesday November 21st 2006.

The replica of James Cook's ship HM Bark Endeavour is well worth a visit. You can really get the feel of how sailors lived in the 18th century. This ship is a highly accurate reproduction of the original ship that took Cook and his crew around the world between 1768 -1771 and which would lead to the first British settlement in Australia in 1788. This replica has twice sailed around the world. You can read about the original ship here and the building of the replica here.

Lands Department Building, Bridge Street, Monday November 13th 2006.

This heritage listed building was designed in the Renaissance Revival style and was built in the years 1876 - 1891. Niches in the Bridge Street facade contain statues of 12 men who had distinguished themselves in the exploration of the colony. This is one of three colonial administration buildings grouped together at the eastern end of Bridge Street. The other two are the Education Department and the Chief Secretary's building. A fellow Sydney photoblogger has posted a photo of the latter here.

A melted ice cream van, entitled "Hot, with a Chance of a Late Storm" by the Sydney based collective the Glue Society is one of my favourites. You can view a panorama of Tamarama Beach here.

Druitt Street, Friday November 10th 2006.

The Queen Victoria Building, QVB, is a Victorian era (1896) shopping mall built in the Byzantine style and is celebrating its 20th anniversary since it was fully restored to its former glory. The statue of Queen Victoria has an interesting history. It is the work of Irish sculptor John Hughes. This statue stood outside the Irish Houses of Parliament in Dublin until 1947 and was given to the people of Sydney by the Irish Government in 1987. You can view a panorama of the street here.
