Sydney Webcam

Sydney Webcam was a two year project that ran from May 2005 to July 2007. Over 27 months 772 photographs were posted and the site was visited by over 153,000 people.

The project has come to an end (for now) and I would like to thank all those who have taken the time to visit the site. You can still enjoy the photos by browsing through the archives.

AMP Building, Circular Quay (originally taken 23rd May 2005). In the 1950's building height restrictions were lifted in Sydney and in 1962 this became Australia's first skyscraper. It is now dwarfed by the many other taller buildings that sit behind it.

Sydney Opera House, Friday 29th June 2007.

UNESCO yesterday declared the Sydney Opera House a World Heritage site and a masterpiece of 20th century architecture. It takes its place alongside the likes of the Taj Mahal, the Statue of Liberty, the Great Wall of China and Egypt's pyramids as cultural sites of outstanding universal value. The building is the youngest on the list and only the second by a living architect.

Macquarie Street, Monday 25th June 2007.

The British Medical Association Building is one of Sydney's great Art Deco treasures. Built in 1930 it was one of the tallest of the new skyscrapers (13 stories) in Sydney at the time, but what set it apart was the extraordinary decorations. The facade of the building is festooned with gargoyles and beautiful handmade tiles in rich designs that express Australian flora, fauna and medical symbols. It retains its original usage as medical consulting rooms.

Today is officially the first day of Winter.

"We Won." Cast in 1893 by Italian sculptor Tommaso Sani, this bronze artwork is of a rugby player with the face of Apollo. This is one of only two surviving statues from a collection of thirty one that were in the park originally. The others were lost through theft and vandalism.

Then & Now. The image on the left was taken in 1966 by Jenny Robinson (who lived on this street) just before she left to live in London. She asked me to photograph it as it appears today, which I was very happy to do. I love to look at old city photos and see the differences that the passage of time brings about.

The Rocks, Thursday 24th May 2007.

Built in 1816, Cadmans Cottage is one of only a handful of Sydney buildings that remain from the first 30 years of the colony. Over the years this sandstone cottage has been a water transport headquarters, a sailors' home, a water police station, and is now a museum. These visiting school children have dressed up for their visit.

Holy Trinity Church, Berrima, Southern Highlands, Sunday 20th May 2007.

Designed by Edmund Blacket in a simple Gothic Revival Style, the church was built in 1849 from stone quarried directly behind it. The stained glass windows came from a church in Cornwall in England and are thought to date to the 15th century. Blacket was the New South Wales Colonial Architect and responsible for many churches and public buildings in the colony as well as the main building of Sydney University.

Interesting weather across Sydney today. Lots of (very welcome) rain in the morning and then in the afternoon the wind got up and the heavy grey clouds completely cleared to reveal a blue sky in the space of an hour. I don't think I have ever seen a sky clear so fast.

White Bay Power Station, Rozelle, Wednesday 16th May 2007.

This disused power station, one of inner Sydney's oldest and most significant industrial sites, awaits plans for redevelopment. The coal fired station began generating electricity in 1917 and was the longest serving of Sydney's four metropolitan power plants. The station ceased producing power on Christmas Day 1983.

Macquarie Street, Tuesday 15th May 2007.

Hyde Park Barracks built between 1817 & 1819 by convict labour provided lodgings for convicts working in government employment around Sydney until its closure in 1848. It became an Immigration Depot for single female immigrants (many fleeing the Irish Famine) until 1886. From 1887 to 1979 law courts and government offices were based at the Barracks. It is now a museum.

Mortlake, Thursday 10th May 2007.

The Mortlake Ferry, also known as the Putney Punt, is a cable ferry operating between Mortlake and Putney on the Parramatta River. It is the last remaining car ferry on Sydney's waterways. The ferry service has been in operation since 1928 and this ferry was built in 1960. While carrying much less than it has in the past the ferry still operates daily and is protected by a National Trust heritage order.

On this day in 1770 His Majesty's Bark Endeavour, commanded by Lt. James Cook (later Captain), made first landfall on the Australian continent at a place now known as Botany Bay just south of Sydney. This area was deemed suitable for situating a settlement and British Colonial outpost which occurred eighteen years later with the arrival of the First Fleet. This bronze statue of Cook was erected in 1879.

Brooklyn Cemetery, Wednesday 25th April 2007.

No one is sure who actually shot down The Red Baron in April 1918 but Robert Buie claims to have done so and even has it etched on his headstone. He died 43 years ago on this day, Anzac Day , the day when Australia commemorates the anniversary of the tragic Gallipoli landings of 1915. You can read about Robert Buie here.

Garden Island Naval Base, Wednesday 18th April 2007.

The National Trust has listed this giant hammerhead crane to mark World Heritage Day today and wants the structure nominated as one of the country's top 10 endangered items. Built almost sixty years ago and capable of lifting loads of up to 250 tonnes, it is the largest dockside crane in Australia and dominates the foreshore near Woolloomooloo. It is now disused and at risk of falling apart and being pulled down.
